Patuxai
monument ; architectural highlight
Add: Th Lan Xang

A large monument reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Patuxai is known by a variety of names, and boasts four archways. It was built in the 1960s with US-purchased cement that was supposed to have been used for the construction of a new airport; foreign residents sometimes refer to it as 'the vertical runway'.

Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm

Pha That Luang
religious/spiritual ; monument
The most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang is a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. Its full official name, Pha Chedi Lokajulamani, means World-Precious Sacred Stupa, and an image of the main stupa appears on the national seal. Legend has it that a reliquary was built here to enclose a piece of the Buddha's breastbone.

Hours: Tue-Sun 8:00am-4:00pm

The Lao National Museum
museum
Th Samsenthai
Previously the Lao Revolutionary Museum, much of the collection retains an unmistakable revolutionary zeal. There are many artefacts and photos from the Pathet Lao's (PL) lengthy struggle for power, as well as enough historic weaponry to arm all the extras in a Rambo film. Worth a look, it also features temporary (and nonrevolutionary) exhibitions.
Hours: 8:00am-12:00pm & 1:00pm-4:00pm.
